Rep. John Lewis was elected to Congress in 1986 representing Georgia's 5th District. He is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and is the ranking Democrat on its Subcommittee on Oversight. Rep. Lewis is senior chief deputy Democratic Whip and is often referred to as the "conscience" of the United States Congress.
Rep. Lewis is an icon of the civil rights movement. Serving as president of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he risked his life to bring about positive change. In 2011, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
