Activism in Action: ACCE Demands Housing Justice Now
Liberty Hill supports organizations fighting for housing justice through our Stay Housed L.A. initiative. This program builds people and collective power by educating tenants on their rights, referring tenants to legal aid when necessary, and providing peer support with other tenants going through a housing crisis.
Through Stay Housed L.A., one of our grantees—Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Action—started organizing tenants at a building in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw with approximately 400 units that are rife with every habitability issue imaginable, including raw sewage seeping through the pipes, flees, bed bugs, and black mold. Almas Sayeed, Liberty Hill’s Vice President, Public Partnerships shared, “I've litigated cases like this, and the sheer size of this complex combined with the issues involved means the magnitude is overwhelming.”
ACCE recently held a press conference to raise awareness of these issues impacting families in the building. Even with tenant protections in place, bad actors are creating slum conditions and endangering the health and safety of tenants.
