Black History Month Grantee Series
In celebration of Black History Month this February, we invited the Liberty Hill community to explore a special series highlight the countless African American heroes whose contributions and narratives are often overlooked in history books. Join us as we shine a light on the remarkable frontline, Black-led organizations in Los Angeles that are diligently working to make LA a better place for everyone.
Black Women for Wellness
As part of the STAND-LA coalition, Black Women for Wellness played a crucial role in the historic victories against Big Oil in LA County. Thanks to their hard work and dedication—along with years of community outreach and persistence—they successfully rallied residents and won the LA County-approved motion to prohibit new drilling and phase out existing drilling across the entire county!
Brotherhood Crusade
This historic organization has been making a difference for over 50 years and is dedicated to tackling the challenges faced by underserved black communities in LA. In 2011, they proudly became an anchor organization of Liberty Hill’s Brothers, Sons, Selves coalition—and they continue to champion important issues for young men of color today.
LA Black Worker Coalition
Since 2009, LABWC has fought for workplace equity and transformed the economic landscape for Black communities in Los Angeles, securing fair wages, enhancing job opportunities, and improving labor protections.
Sister Warrior Freedom Coalition
Since 2017, Liberty Hill grantee partners at the Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition have fought—and won—historic policy changes that prioritize the needs of systems-impacted women, girls and trans people across the state. This groundbreaking member-led organization has been at the forefront of transformative justice, pushing for decriminalization and decarceration of their communities.
Los Angeles Community Action Network
LACAN was formed in 1999 with a mission to tackle civil rights issues and help prevent criminalization of poverty. Over the years, their focus has expanded to include critical areas including women’s rights, housing, and access to healthy food. LACAN continues that legacy today through its leadership in historic initiatives aimed at supporting unhoused residents of Skid Row and advocating for the needs of this community.
Through their historic efforts, these organizations, which represent tens of thousands of Black-led organizations across the nation, are continuing the fight for justice and equality, and creating a better world for generations to come.
