Community Power Collective Fights for Rent Debt Relief

Last month, Liberty Hill Housing Justice partners Community Power Collective—a grassroots organization working to build power with tenants and workers to win adequate housing and economy justice for LA families—rallied at the steps of Los Angeles City Hall to advocate for rent debt relief for thousands of low-income L.A. tenants that accrued rent debt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community Power Collective (CPC), alongside other members of the Keep LA Housed coalition, gathered to urge elected officials to take immediate action and cancel COVID-19 rent debt before the February 1st deadline—a move that could potentially save thousands of LA families from eviction and displacement.

CPC reports that collectively, LA tenants have claimed more than $381 million in rental debt and have been offered a total of only $30 million in assistance. With the looming repayment deadline fast approaching, CPC emphasize that if elected leaders don’t take action, thousands of families could find themselves at risk of losing their homes.

While Housing Justice organizers have fought and won significant permanent protections for LA tenants, the work is far from over. Liberty Hill is proud to support community-based organizations like Community Power Collective as they continue to work to transform communities, uplift low-income tenants, and fight to secure permanent tenant protections across LA.
