Narrative Change Roundtable
The CAA Foundation recently hosted a roundtable discussion on storytelling and narrative change as powerful tools in shaping our understanding of homelessness in L.A.
The event brought together dozens of CAA members for an informative and engaging conversation featuring Creator and Executive Producer of “Clipped” Gina Welch, Liberty Hill Foundation President & CEO Shane Murphy Goldsmith, and City of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Guest speakers shared insights about LA’s unhoused population and shared ideas on how the film and television industry can use narrative change to push back against stereotypes and encourage a broader understanding of the issues that doesn’t demonize people experiencing homelessness.
“There is no magic bullet for narrative change,” shared Liberty Hill’s Shane Murphy Goldsmith. “However, there are steps industry professionals can take to ensure authenticity and dignity are at the core of its storytelling when it comes to our unhoused neighbors and the issue at hand.”
As Shane mentioned in her call to action, a step in the right direction is to Get Proximate, Engage Experts, and Tell the Real Stories. Narratives, if framed the right way, can be used to spark change, shift difficult conversations, and create better understanding of complex issues. And Liberty Hill and its partners are ready and willing to help.
