Stay Housed LA Know Your Rights Workshops
As the impact of recent wildfires continues to touch our communities, Liberty Hill and its community partners at Stay Housed LA (SHLA) are stepping up to help LA tenants navigate obstacles and understand their rights.
The SHLA Know Your Rights Workshops, presented in partnership between SHLA community-based organizations and legal service providers, are designed to help affected tenants understand their rights and access the resources available to them during these tough times.
These workshops are vibrant educational hubs within the community, offered both virtually and in person 4-5 days a week in multiple languages. They go beyond conventional legal education, creating interactive spaces where tenants can actively engage with information regarding their housing rights.
"It's been great to witness the impact this work has on tenants directly and how our community partners are able to build community with impacted tenants and empower them to connect with their neighbors to fight for their rights,” shared Jessica Prieto, Senior Program Manager, Public Partnerships at Liberty Hill. “Stay Housed LA has grown to the point where we can now more rapidly respond to emergency situations such as the Eaton and Palisades fires and provide direct resources to those impacted by these disasters."
Presentations cover important topics, such as legal protections after natural disasters, tenant’s rights in the event of total home destruction, and landlord obligations, among other things.
This combination of consistent availability, diverse subject matter, and engaging presentations has made these workshops a cornerstone of SHLA’s community education strategy.
To date, Stay Housed LA partners have hosted over 1,841 workshops and reached more than 2.4 million tenants since the program launched through phone and text banking, as well as in person outreach. Stay Housed LA will continue to ensure residents are aware of their rights and know where to find the support they need.
