(LOS ANGELES)— Liberty Hill’s Wally Marks Leadership Institute Commissions Training Program prepares local community leaders to expand their influence by serving on boards and commissions which wield significant political power across L.A. County. This program helps community leaders throughout L.A. County, including in the City of Los Angeles, become appointed members on hundreds of boards and commissions that oversee key city and county agencies and advise elected decision makers on core policies and programs that impact quality of life for Los Angeles area residents. Decisions made by these agencies have a major impact throughout the city and county.

This year— for the first time ever—Liberty Hill is partnering with Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and her team to provide targeted support to residents, advocates and individuals who work specifically in supervisorial district 2. The goal is to continue to build a pipeline of leaders who are interested in and prepared for service on a variety of Boards and Commissions. Participants will benefit from opportunities to interact with experienced current and past commissioners and effective, knowledgeable community organizations. Participants will also engage in opportunities for learning, networking, placement preparation, technical support, and mentoring with inside and outside advocates from the city, the county, and beyond.

“My office is proud to partner with Liberty Hill Foundation for their Commissioner Training Program. Our commissioners play a vital role in helping to advocate and inform Countywide policies and services for millions of residents” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Holly J. Mitchell. “This partnership makes the process of becoming a commissioner more accessible and will prepare our residents with the skills to lead equitably.”

Liberty Hill’s Commissions Training Program for Emerging Leaders is a cohort-driven, hands-on learning experience that incorporates Liberty Hill’s specialized knowledge of the commission appointment process, decision-making processes, and both internal and external strategies for influencing just policy outcomes. With a 42-year track record of investment and training among LA’s diverse community leadership, Liberty Hill Foundation is bringing its Commissions Training Program to district 2 to build power for communities throughout Los Angeles.

“This partnership aims to help diverse community leaders have a voice on core policies and programs that impact quality of life for Los Angeles area residents,” said Shane Murphy Goldsmith, Liberty Hill Foundation President/CEO. “We know that the decisions made by these agencies have a major impact throughout the city and county. This partnership will ensure emerging leaders from communities most impacted by systemic injustice are well positioned to build power in their communities.”

Those selected commit to participating in movement-building work to bring about more

equitable decision-making on the City and County of Los Angeles via their roles on appointed boards and commissions.

Applications should be submitted online by February 23rd, 2022 via the survey link at https://libhill.co/commissions-app

About Liberty Hill Foundation

Liberty Hill Foundation is a laboratory for social change philanthropy. We leverage the power of community organizers, donor activists, and allies to advance social justice through strategic investment in grants, leadership training, and campaigns. We envision a society in which all people have a powerful voice, including those currently shut out of our democracy, people cut off from opportunities because of their skin color, gender or sexual orientation, where they live, or where they were born. We will not rest until society provides justice and equality for all.
